Hello Parents!
This week and for the remainder of the year our unit of study will be All About the Ocean. We will learn about ocean zones, oceanographers, why oceans are salty and about several ocean animals. This is a great unit to end the school year. My how fast this year has gone by! During these 8 days, I will be completing the end of the semester testing. Please go over all the report card skills for the second nine skills at home. I have already begun some of the testing and all of the students are mastery the skills! WAY TO GO! We will also begin our "Holiday Around the World" unit. We will learn about holidays, customs and traditions from around the world! This is always a popular unit of study!
Be on the lookout for information regarding our Winter Party. The party will be held on Wednesday, December 19 from 12:30-2:00. This is just around the corner!!!! I was so excited that we had so many family members attend! It was truly a packed house. The food was delicious and the entertainment was adorable:) I hope you all enjoyed it as much as I did! The December and January snack calendars are coming home Friday, Nov. 30. Please note that the January calendar is on the back of the December calendar. Thank you! We have almost completed our Module 2 in "EL." We are working hard on our culminating activity for this Module. Each student is creating their own weather book with character, setting and three major events. The entire class has been super excited about being the author and illustrator of their very own book. Next week, we will be learning how to critique our peers work in a kind and positive way! Sight Words--identify the word FROM Writing—use drawing, dictation, and writing to compose opinion pieces Math—End of Modules Assessments The Kindergarten Thanksgiving Feast is less than one week away! We are all getting very excited about this big event. The children will walk into the lunchroom at 11:00 and go directly to the stage to sing three songs for your entertainment. After the singing, each class will be dismissed one at a time to go to their tables and begin the feast. Please make sure that you have your food on our assigned tables before 11:00 so you will be ready to hear the children sing. If you haven't seen an email about signing up for food, please let me know. It was sent out several weeks ago. We are working hard each day on our "costumes" for the feast and learning all we can about the First Thanksgiving. I know this will be a very special day for all and it is always a great way to start the holiday season! Hope to see you all Tuesday, Nov. 20th in the Richland Cafeteria! What a wonderful day we had at the zoo! We were all thrilled that the rain held off! It ended up being one of the best days we have ever had at the zoo! I want to thank all of the parents who attended this field trip! Now that we are in the month of November, we will begin working on the Thanksgiving Feast. We have also been working very hard on writing skills. Please take the time to ask you child about his/her writing when it comes home. I can see their confidence growing daily! The BIG NEWS is our field trip to the zoo. Please read the following list of important tips for the zoo. *ALL students need a lunch--please put the lunch in a plastic bag with handles. This makes it easy for the children to carry them while at the zoo. *I will send home the shirts on Tuesday for the students to wear to the zoo on Wednesday. Thank you all for sending in items for the Apple Tasting Party and to Melissa Z. and Rachel J. for helping get all the food organized. The kids had a ball and they loved trying new "apple" foods. I appreciate all you do for our class . When we return from fall break, we will begin a nine week study on the weather. The children will learn the components of the weather, what meteorologist do and so much more. During this study, we will incorporate fall/winter holidays and traditions. I am gradually beginning to send home books for your child to practice. If a book is sent home, please make sure that it is returned the very next day so I can send it home with other children. During this week I will be completing final nine weeks testing during small group instruction. Please review all nine weeks skills during the week at home. This week we have been learning about apples. We studied a non-fiction book called "Apples for Everyone." We learned the following new vocabulary words: orchard, harvest, ripe, farmer's market and roadside stand. We will take a break from apples for the week of 9/24 and pick back up with it the week before Fall Break. At that time we will learn about the life cycle of the apple. Please make sure that you are reviewing all the sight words, letter sound and math skills. The end of the nine weeks is just around the corner! This is a HUGE day for us! Please tell all the Grandparents that we will see them in the cafeteria as close to 11:30 as possible. The children and I are looking forward to a wonderful day.
Hopefully, you have seen the list of sight words that came home in the binders this week. If not, please let me know. This is the list each child will need to be able to read by the end of the school year. Please make sure that you look at the list below of academic activities to let you know exactly the word{s) as well as other skills that we will be learning during the week. Just a reminder, use the sight word activity page in the binder for fun activities to help keep your child excited about learning their sight words. Please check your child's backpack to make sure their binder and lunchbox fit properly. Many children are bringing blankets that are fairly large and the children are having a hard time getting everything into their backpack. IF they have to bring a blanket, please make sure it is very small. I appreciate your help with this. GREAT NEWS: Our class was the very first class from the entire school to win a "REDHAWK" from the lunchroom! THIS IS HUGE!!!!!!!! We even beat the older grades! We are learning about the attributes of toys, how to be "toy experts" and writing about the toys that we like the best. We reading fiction and non-fiction books about toys. The favorite book thus far is a non fiction book called, "The Lego Man, A true story." Please have your child tell you about this book! They were totally amazed that this book was true! During our foundational skills block, the children are doing a great job learning all the different, engaging and interactive ways that we learn about phonics, grammar and new sight words. We are having a blast. Our study in math was very simple in the beginning, but now we are starting to learn about "hidden partners" within five. The activities for "hidden partners" is an excellent prerequisite for addition. (The children are having so much fun with it that they don't even realize how much they are learning:)
Beginning Sept. 4, the September homework packet will be coming home. Please make sure that it stays in the binder at all times and opened to the last page completed. Thank you for your help with this. In addition this this, PLEASE have your child practice our sight words each and every day. They will always be listed below under Academic Activities. These ipads will help all the children take their computerized test and be more efficient because of the touch screen. Not many children these days are familiar with using a mouse:) The ipads have already been ordered so I hope to have them in the classroom by the end of the week or the first of next week! Last Monday, when the children walked into the classroom, they were excited, but at the same time, they were nervous and a little bit scared. However, by the end of the week, they were walking into the room confident and unpacking their belongings all by themselves and beginning journal work. What a difference a few days can make! I can already tell it is going to be a great year!
These past two weeks we have worked diligently on the rules, routines and procedures. We did this in a fun way by reading books to help us develop our classroom rules, learn how to kind to one another and how to share. The best part of last week was making Friendship Salad after reading The Boy with a Rainbow Heart! Thanks to everyone who donated items to make this fun activity a success! We will continue next week reading great books to help us continue to learn all we need to know about Kindergarten:) If you have not done so yet, please consider donating to the capital campaign.
